Development of transport structures in the South Caucasus through formation of international transport corridors.

Abstract

In the context of globalization considerable importance is attached to the transport infrastructure, which is often seen as a pledge for national economic competitiveness. Insufficient and poor quality of transport infrastructure constrains the economic activity and significantly reduces the quality of life. While investment in infrastructure services can promote the growth, reducing operating costs and encouraging cross-border trade flows. The active participation of a wide range of countries in the formation of international transport corridors has become one of the priorities in the field of domestic transport in recent years. Availability of transport corridors is of vital importance especially for the landlocked countries. Geographical difficulties related to the lack of direct access to maritime trade, invariably affect the economic performance of the landlocked countries. This circumstance necessarily affects export competitiveness of these countries.
