Geo-economic development strategies of BSEC countries

Abstract

Theoretical part of the paper provides a matrix approach to the definition of geo-economic development strategies and integration groups. The matrix of geo-economic development strategies is based on B.Balassa Index (Revealed Comparative Advantage) and index proposed by K.Laursen (Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage). Author identified restrictions of these indices and gave detailed characteristic of 6-quadrant matrix. Kind of geo-economic development strategy was defined for each quadrant. In the analytical part of the article author analyzed the performance of BSEC domestic trade basing on the United Nations University data: intra-regional trade intensity index, the index of symmetric trade introversion. Comparative matrix of BSEC positions and its strategic position in the world economy to commodity groups were outlined basing on TradeMap data for 2011. To increase the competitiveness of member countries author identified and characterized the strategic directions of international cooperation within BSEC.
